On Jan. 20, 2024, Dr. David Merwine, associate professor of biology, will present the 1990 Academy Award Best Picture nominee “Awakenings” (PG-13) starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro and based on the psychologist Oliver Sacks’ 1973 memoir of the same name. Williams plays a neurologist based on Sacks who discovers the benefits of the drug L-DOPA for catatonic patients. Following the movie, Merwine will explain the neurological changes seen in the film and lead a discussion.
