Abstract:

Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as a promising class of materials for advanced surface coatings and lubrication owing to their molecular tunability, negligible vapor pressure, and exceptional thermal stability. Among these, the highly fluorinated imidazolium ionic liquid, HFILOH, has demonstrated simultaneous hydrophilicity and oleophobicity at nanometer-scale coating thicknesses, a monolayer thickness of approximately 0.75 nm, and a thermal stability onset above 350°C, surpassing the state-of-the-art perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricants in both thermal robustness and compactness. Despite this progress, three critical questions remain unresolved: what molecular mechanism governs HFILOH's simultaneous hydrophilic-oleophobic wetting behavior, how do its compact ionic structure and processing conditions govern thin-film tribological and self-healing performance for hard disk drive (HDD) media applications, and how can rational data-driven molecular design replace the current trial-and-error paradigm for next-generation IL lubricants.

As preliminary work, film formation kinetics, dual-layer structure, and wetting behavior of dip-coated HFILOH on silica were systematically investigated. HFILOH forms a dual-layer structure consisting of a self-limiting bonded layer and a concentration-dependent mobile layer, analogous to PFPE lubricants. The bonded layer formation follows reversible pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics with characteristic time constants of 314–2080 s. The mobile layer thickness scales linearly with concentration (R² = 0.99), consistent with Landau–Levich theory. Contact angle measurements show hydrophilic-oleophobic wetting across all conditions, which can be attributed to time-dependent fluorinated chain orientation toward the film–air interface.

This dissertation addresses the three open questions through three integrated aims. Aim 1 performs the first systematic multi-probe validation of the size-exclusion wetting mechanism using 8–10 probe liquids spanning 3.5–10 Å effective molecular diameter on HFILOH, its non-hydroxylated analog HFIL, and PFPE ZDOL. The HFIL/HFILOH comparison directly isolates the contribution of hydrogen bonding versus confinement-induced ordering to gap-size control. Aim 2 addresses two HDD performance gaps: higher friction and unknown thin-film mobility. The friction will be reduced by bonded-fraction optimization via UV treatment and chemical modification, e.g., adding more hydroxyl end groups. The spreading experiment (in collaboration with Seagate Technology LLC) will be conducted using an optical surface analyzer to characterize the thin-film mobility. Aim 3 develops supervised machine learning models trained on a curated dataset of approximately 75 ILs to predict monolayer thickness, bonded fraction, contact angles, coefficient of friction, thin-film diffusivity, and thermal stability from molecular descriptors. SHAP attribution analysis will extract interpretable design rules, and the di-hydroxyl HFILOH variant will serve as the prospective validation target.

Together, these aims establish the first mechanistic and predictive framework for HFILOH-class ionic liquid thin films, with expected impact on HDD lubrication, antifogging, self-cleaning, and oil–water separation.

Together, the programs have reached more than 1,200 scholars from Western Pennsylvania and beyond over the past 18 years, with many alumni going on to pursue STEM⁺ careers—including bioengineering—and even joining organizations that supported the camp. This summer, the program will again partner with the Vascular Medicine Institute’s VESSELS program, led by Dr. Daniel Shiwarski, to offer high school scholars hands-on training in 3D bioprinting and advanced bioengineering techniques.

Expanded in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Katrina Knight to include elementary school students alongside middle and high school scholars, CampBioE 2.0 builds on the legacy of CampBioE to create a continuous STEM⁺ pipeline from elementary through high school. Together, the programs have reached more than 1,200 scholars from Western Pennsylvania and beyond over the past 18 years, with many alumni going on to pursue STEM⁺ careers—including bioengineering—and even joining organizations that supported the camp.
