Abstract: Dust is a small but influential component of galaxies. By regulating star formation, influencing chemical evolution, reprocessing starlight into the infrared, and more, dust affects both our view of galaxies and their overall evolution. Recently, observations have revealed that vast populations of dust also exist outside of galaxies, far from the star-forming regions where dust is created, presenting an untapped well of information on the galactic baryon cycle and the role dust plays in it. In this defense, I present my efforts to constrain the source and nature of dust in the circumgalactic medium through the use of massive simulations of dusty galactic outflows, made using the GPU-based hydrodynamics code, Cholla. I will also discuss how these simulations can be directly compared to cutting-edge observations of dusty galactic outflows from JWST using a novel model for PAH heating and emission.

Matter inside neutron stars and their mergers can reach densities of more than 10 times normal nuclear density. In such extreme environments, new particles and phases of matter appear, as well as different interactions become important. I review old and new ways to use neutron star observables to learn about dense matter, comment on what we know and what we expect to discover within the next years concerning dense matter, and provide an overview of modern ways to build and share dense matter descriptions (usually referred to as equations of state).

A student applicant should send an updated CV and a statement of financial need, indication of the talk submission to Pheno 26, and arrange for a short recommendation letter sent from their thesis advisor, by email to pittpacc@pitt.edu with the subject line "Pheno 26 travel assistance". The decision will be based on the academic qualification and the financial need. The deadline for the application is April 13, and the winners will be notified by April 17. (Each research group may be limited to one awardee. Winners in the previous years may have lower priority for consideration. Winner institutes and names will be announced at the Symposium banquet on Tuesday, May 12.)
