Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call that day. Participants will climb 2,200 steps, symbolizing the approximately 110 stories of the World Trade Center climbed by first responders on 9/11. The climb is not a race or competition; each step is an opportunity to remember, reflect, and honor those whose lives were lost or forever changed.

Please arrive at the bottom of Panther Run, next to the RWC, in time for the start of your selected wave. The event is open to students, student organizations, faculty, and staff. Participants may register individually or as a group, and you do not need to be an experienced stair climber to participate. This event is about remembrance, reflection, and coming together as a community.

Title: Acetylation at H3.3 K122 is a key determinant of stem cell identity
Abstract: Stem cell identity is defined by two main properties: the ability to self-renew and the ability to differentiate into any cell type (pluripotency). These properties are maintained through proper gene expression which is influenced by both chromatin state and the activity of master regulators OCT4 and SOX2, which are known as “pioneering” factors. Chromatin state is defined by the content of the histone octamer as well as post-translational modifications to the octamer, both of which influence the histone’s contact with DNA and therefore the accessibility of DNA. A histone residue of particular interest, H3 K122, lies in a direct contact point with DNA, and its acetylation is a key regulatory modification. We previously investigated the role of this residue in histone variant H3.3, which is enriched at active regulatory elements in mammals. We found that H3.3 K122A homozygous mutants are not viable in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), but we have recently generated H3.3 K122Q and H3.3 K122R mESC lines that are viable. Because H3.3 K122Q is a mimetic of H3.3 K122 acetylation and the latter cannot be acetylated, I can assess the global impacts of both “constitutive” and deficient H3.3 K122 acetylation using these lines. I have found that H3.3 K122Q phenotypically mirrors a naïve stem cell state via slower growth and increased alkaline phosphatase staining, a marker for pluripotency. H3.3 K122R lines show extremely modest changes in both phenotype and differential gene expression, where H3.3 K122Q lines have significantly altered transcription patterns. I have also analyzed CUT&RUN datasets and identified that H3.3 K122Q mutants have elevated H3.3, K27ac, and K122ac at gene promoters compared to H3.3 K122R and wild type lines. In addition, I found that nucleosome-bound SOX2 is elevated at both enhancers and gene promoters in H3.3 K122Q lines, but non-nucleosome-bound SOX2 is similar across all lines. Ultimately, my data support a model where H3.3 K122Q mutants have a more naïve stem cell identity due to increased occupancy of activating histone modifications and pioneer factors at TSSs. Further work will determine the differentiation potential of these mutant lines and characterizing exactly which biological pathways are causing this reversion to the naïve stem cell state.

Title: Ectopic ion flux reshapes primary cilia signaling
Abstract: The primary cilium is a membrane protrusion from the cell into the extracellular space that senses external cues. Due to its high surface-to-volume ratio and direct ion influx through ciliary ion channels, these organelles maintain an ionic composition markedly different from the cytoplasm. This creates a highly sensitive environment for external cues to stimulate ciliary downstream signaling into the cell body, including signaling for neuron growth, patterning, and division in the hippocampus. Interestingly, the ionic composition of cilia is preferentially cationic, causing the ciliary membrane potential slightly more depolarized than the general plasma membrane. Yet how this distinct membrane potential and cationic milieu shape ciliary membrane remains unknown. Here, we have developed an optogenetic tool to visualize ciliary membrane potential and a ciliary anion chemogenetic tool to perturb ciliary ionic composition, enabling direct investigation of how ciliary ionic composition governs ciliary signaling and brain physiology.

Zhengbo Zhou’s Presentation Information

Presentation Title: Modeling Spatiotemporal Asymmetries in Longitudinal Mammography for Breast Cancer Risk Prediction

Abstract: Breast cancer risk prediction from longitudinal mammograms requires modeling subtle changes not only over time but also between the left and right breasts. In this talk, I will present STA-Risk, a deep learning framework that explicitly models spatiotemporal asymmetries in longitudinal mammography for future breast cancer risk prediction. The framework incorporates side and temporal encodings together with an asymmetry-aware learning objective to capture bilateral differences and longitudinal changes across screening examinations. I will also discuss challenges in cross-cohort domain shift and how joint training across datasets can improve robustness and generalization. These findings highlight the potential of explicitly modeling spatial and temporal asymmetries for personalized breast cancer risk assessment from routinely acquired screening mammograms.

Bio: Zhengbo Zhou is a PhD in the Intelligent Systems Program at the University of Pittsburgh, advised by Prof. Shandong Wu. His research focuses on artificial intelligence for medical imaging, particularly longitudinal representation learning, breast cancer risk prediction, and multimodal learning.

Arun Narayanan’s Presentation Information

Title: Addressing a Bias in Evaluating of Student Self-Explanations of Worked Programming Examples

Abstract: Worked examples are step-by-step solutions to problems in a specific domain, offered to students to acquire domain-specific problem-solving skills. The power of worked examples could be magnified by combining them with self-explanations, which ask students to explain rather than passively study each problem-solving step. The main challenge of this approach is assessing the correctness of the student's explanations. In the current approach, student explanations are judged by their semantic similarity to an explanation provided by an instructor or domain expert. However, recent studies of example explanations in the domain of programming demonstrated that many students express themselves very differently from domain experts. In this situation, a traditional semantic similarity approach might introduce bias against students who correctly explain worked examples but are considerably different from expert explanations. In this paper, we use a recently published dataset to compare several explanation-assessment approaches based on semantic similarity with alternative approaches based on direct Large Language Model prompting. Our results show that the use of Large Language Models enables worked example systems that follow an active learning approach to reduce bias in evaluating example explanations.

Bio: Arun is a PhD Student in the Intelligent Systems Program at the University of Pittsburgh. His current research is on developing personalized educational technologies for students in undergraduate computer science. He works with using AI and LLMs to build Intelligent User interfaces for students to receive feedback on their interactions and in introductory programming interfaces. His research is in the topic of applied AI in education, particularly in the topics of data analysis, data mining, machine learning and natural language processing. He also works with developing intelligent textbooks.

Through a series of place-based writing experiences in Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County, and at the University of Pittsburgh, participants will explore historically, culturally, and civically significant sites through writing, reflection, conversation, and community. Drawing on the National Writing Project tradition of the writing marathon, we will move through public spaces together, pausing to observe, write, and share in a spirit of generosity and curiosity.

Together, we will consider: Whose stories help us understand who we have been, who we are, and who we hope to become?

Participants do not need to consider themselves writers to join. The Window Keeper is open to adult educators, writers, artists, students, community leaders, historians, cultural workers, and anyone curious about the stories that shape our communities. Whether you write every day or have not written in years, you are welcome.

The WPWP will host the Window Keeper experiences on August 15, August 22, and September 12. Transportation and workshop materials will be provided at no cost for participants.

Abstract: A longstanding puzzle in microbial ecology is "the paradox of the plankton": how can a large number of species coexist on a small number of resources without the fastest-growing species outcompeting the rest? Modern experiments addressing this question reveal strong fluctuations and universal behavior in microbial abundances, suggesting that this puzzle can be addressed using tools from statistical physics. I will describe several examples of this approach that reveal different mechanisms of resolving the paradox. I particular, I will describe work with our experimental collaborators, whose data show that thousands of bacterial populations can coexist in a mouse tissue. Our minimal model explains the populations' universal abundance statistics and suggests that they avoid extinction by forming spatial niches. This field represents a frontier for statistical physics and in turn demonstrates that physics approaches can yield fundamental insights for ecology.

From there, we'll introduce HAIL's Principles vs. Performance Matrix, a decision-making framework designed to help you make decisions based on identified values and principles about when and how to bring data or AI into a decision. Rather than starting with the technology, the framework starts with you by first naming the values or principles that matter most based on your role in a given decision, then identifying the performance metrics you're actually trying to move forward, and only then considering whether and how data, AI, or algorithmic tools can help advance those goals in a way that stays aligned with your values. This framework is flexible by design meaning that advisors can use it for their own decision-making, and it also offers a simple, values-first way to talk with students about the choices they're facing in the age of AI.

Title: A Gravitomagnetic Bootstrap: localizing rotational and conformal structure in Newtonian gravity as a path to general relativity

Abstract:

Historically Newtonian gravity was understood in terms of long-range forces imposed on an absolute spacetime background, we now know it can be better understood as a localization of inertial structure - or at least of that part which distinguishes inertial motion from rectilinear acceleration. That perspective suggests a natural generalization: what if we also localize other aspects of inertial structure, like rotation and scale, and make them depend on matter dynamically? The resultant theory is uniquely determined up to an overall constant with the dimensions of velocity. It fails to be Galilean covariant; investigating this failure allows one to 'bootstrap' up to (local) Lorentz covariance in a manner closely analogous to the bootstrap from magnetostatics to Maxwell's theory and special relativity. The resultant theory is equivalent to the first post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity.

This progressive program is ideal for climbers looking to take the next step beyond top-rope climbing in a supportive and supervised environment.

Prerequisite: Participants must hold a current Top-Rope Certification prior to the start of this course.

All rental gear is provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own climbing shoes and equipment.

Please note: This program consists of one class per week for three weeks, and participants are expected to attend all three sessions to successfully complete the course and develop the skills covered throughout the series.

Youth commonly encounter police in their daily lives, and one of every four arrests in the United States is of a person under the age of 25. Compared to adults, interactions between youth and police more often lead to use of force and physical and emotional harm—harms that disproportionately burden the economically poor and Black youth who come into contact with police at relatively high rates. Debates over the proper role of police in managing young people have existed for over a century, yet there is little consensus as to what the ideal relationship between youth and law enforcement should be, systematic efforts to alter these relationships have had limited or even perverse results, and contemporary phenomena (e.g., social media, teen “takeovers,” and changing parenting approaches) bring new challenges to youth-police relations and reform efforts. This talk brings together developmental science, historical sociology, anti-carceral perspectives, and primary research to make sense of “what works” (and doesn’t work) in implementing police reform for youth. To do so, Jacobs and co-investigator Murray will draw on diverse data sources, including interviews (n = 26) and surveys with police (n = 111), and non-participant observation of police training (154 hours) in a California county, sharing preliminary findings from an ongoing, mixed methods, multi-site and multi-year impact and implementation study of a law enforcement training program that seeks to improve police-youth interactions. Implications for scholarship and intervention will be discussed.

September's topic: Unlocking Circuits and Designing Cross-species tools for Pain Discovery and Therapeutics

Presented by: Rebecca Seal, PhD

Rebecca Seal is a Professor of Neurobiology and Otolaryngology in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Research in her lab aims to understand how the various forms of persistent pain, across diverse pathological conditions, traverse the spinal cord with the goal of targeting the spinal cord to treat chronic pain. The lab employs a range of approaches in both rodents and primates and is pioneering non-invasive gene therapy. Dr. Seal is a Rita Allen Foundation Scholar and a Brain and Behavior Foundation Scholar and is Chair of the Pain Research Forum at the International Association for the Study of Pain, an active member of the Society for Neuroscience, and a co-Director of the Pittsburgh Pain Consortium. She previously served on the organizing committee to create the US Association for the Study of Pain (USASP) and served on the Board of Directors of USASP.

In this talk, Dr. Harris shares the personal and scientific motivations behind her work, presents findings from her novel investigation of police violence and cardiometabolic risk among black women, and discusses future directions for research and intervention.

Dr. Harris is a clinical associate in the school of nursing and a nursing postdoctoral fellow in the national clinician scholars program at Duke University. Her research focuses on understanding the biological and health consequences of structural inequities among historically marginalized populations, with a particular focus on black women. Her work examines the impact of social determinants of health, chronic stress, and structural inequities on cardiometabolic health and healthy agin across the lifecourse. Dr. Harris emphasizes culturally responsive, equity-centered approaches to promoting health and well-being.

Ian’s published academic writing comprises critical care health services research and narrative medicine, which has appeared in JAMA, NEJM Catalyst, Annals of Internal Medicine, and several pulmonary and critical care journals.

As a survivor of the intensive care unit himself, Ian’s work is also informed by his personal understanding of critical illness and its aftermath. He writes and speaks about this experience to promote empathy for both healthcare professionals and the people they serve. Ian lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and four children.

Paul Amato is the Principal Advisor for Strategic and Nuclear Deterrence in the Regional, Strategy, and Policy Analysis Division at the Center for Naval Analyses. He is also a nonresident senior fellow in the Forward Defense program of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security.

From 2016-2025, Amato was director of nuclear deterrence policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he and his team led all facets of nuclear policy development, implementation and allied extended deterrence. He oversaw development and implementation of both the 2018 and 2022 Nuclear Posture Reviews, in particular authoring secretary-level policy guidance on nuclear weapons employment. Previously, Amato led nuclear extended deterrence dialogues with the Republic of Korea and NATO.

Prior to his nuclear policy work, Amato served in the Pentagon and overseas on US national security policy in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. His experience includes more than a decade as an attorney, advising clients on employment, compliance and litigation matters; and over twenty-eight years of active and reserve service in the US Marine Corps. He was twice awarded the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award and is a two-time Bronze Star recipient.

Amato is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Featuring Stephen I. Vladeck, Agnes Williams Sesquicentennial Professor of Federal Courts, Georgetown University Law Center

Stephen I. Vladeck is one of the nation's leading scholars on the U.S. Supreme Court, constitutional law, and the federal courts. He is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Shadow Docket, and a frequent legal analyst for CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and other national media outlets. His scholarship has been cited by courts across the country, including the Supreme Court.

For most of American history, the Supreme Court's authority rested not on its independence as such but on a broad, diffuse public trust that it was exercising that independence responsibly — a trust sustained by a continuous, often unglamorous dialogue with Congress over the Court's size, its calendar, its budget, and above all its docket. That dialogue has gone silent. This lecture argues that the resulting crisis is not that the Court has too much power but that it answers to no one for how it uses it, and that the remedy is neither Court-packing nor jurisdiction-stripping but the patient restoration of interbranch accountability-because a Court that Americans across the spectrum believe is behaving responsibly is also the only Court strong enough to stop a president who has decided not to listen.

Bio: Pramod K. Varshney was born in Allahabad, India, in 1952. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering and computer science (with highest honors), and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1972, 1974, and 1976 respectively. Since 1976 he has been with Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY where he is currently a Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His current research interests are in distributed sensor networks and data fusion, detection and estimation theory, wireless communications, machine learning, AI and radar.

Dr. Varshney was the recipient of the 1981 ASEE Dow Outstanding Young Faculty Award. He was elected to the grade of Fellow of the IEEE in 1997 for his contributions in the area of distributed detection and data fusion. In 2000, he received the Third Millennium Medal from the IEEE and Chancellor’s Citation for exceptional academic achievement at Syracuse University. He is the recipient of the IEEE 2012 Judith A. Resnik Award. He received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Drexel University in 2014, ECE Distinguished Alumni Award from UIUC in 2015, the Yaakov Bar-Shalom Award for Lifetime Excellence in Information Fusion as well as ISIF Fellow designation in 2018, the Claude Shannon-Harry Nyquist Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the Pioneer Award from the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Society in 2021, and Syracuse University Chancellor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Presented by Dr. Sara Warix | Assistant Professor of Geology & Geophysics, University of Utah

Talk Abstract:

Quantifying the various ways that climate and land use change can alter stream flow and biogeochemistry is critical to managing water resources, yet challenging due to the complexity of critical zone processes. For example, historic discharge and chemistry trends may not reflect future conditions when the processes that control water storage, transmission, and biogeochemical reactions are fundamentally altered by climate and land use change. We demonstrate hydraulic and biogeochemical processes that are most sensitive to change by comparing watershed discharge and chemistry across variable spatial and temporal scales, from long-term (20+ years) trends from watersheds across the United States, to short-term patterns in individual watersheds. Specifically, we infer changing stream chemistry through changing stream flow source, the exposure of new reaction fronts, temperature impacts on solubility, and anthropogenic impacts such as acid rain and road salt. Overall, we highlight the complexity of stream biogeochemistry, the importance of long-term data records, and a need to consider the non-stationary drivers that impact stream hydrologic and biogeochemical processes.

Biography:

Sara Warix is an Assistant Professor of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Utah, where she leads a research group focused on mountain hydrology and geochemistry in Earth's Critical Zone. Her work spans groundwater-surface water interactions, stream drying dynamics, and solute export across semi-arid western watersheds, combining field, lab, and computational approaches. She completed her PhD at the Colorado School of Mines, Master's at Idaho State University, and Bachelor's at the University of the Pacific.

Dr. Leong is one of the pioneers in developing multifunctional nanocarriers for delivery of drugs, antigens, proteins, siRNA, pDNA, and mRNA. Dr. Leong's contributions have been recognized by his election to the USA National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventors, and the Asian American Academy of Science and Engineering. Recent awards include the Society for Biomaterials' Founders Award (2022), the IEEE-EMBS Career Achievement Award (2023), and the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award (2024). Dr. Leong has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Biomaterials for the past decade.

He has described his work as the study of “how force is used to achieve political objectives, how escalation unfolds, and how strategies of restraint can succeed or fail in international and American political violence.” In anticipation of the September release of his most recent book, Our Own Worst Enemies: America in the Age of Violent Populism, the New Press said, “The nation’s leading expert on political violence diagnoses the gravest threat to American democracy and how to overcome it.” Former U.S. Secretary of Defense and U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel wrote that “Pape’s book presents a critically important and insightful analysis of the dangerous realities of internal divisions that destroy security and governance.” Professor Pape’s earlier books include Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It, The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism, and Bombing to Win: Airpower and Coercion in War. His commentaries have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, New Republic, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, and he has been a featured guest on Face the Nation, The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, All In with Chris Hayes, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, and National Public Radio, among others. Earlier in his career, Professor Pape taught at Dartmouth College and the U.S. Air Force School of Advanced Airpower Studies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt, he graduated summa cum laude, earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa, was selected through a very competitive national process to receive a prestigious, merit-based Harry S. Truman Scholarship, and has his name engraved in Pitt’s Omicron Delta Kappa walk as the most outstanding student leader in his graduating class. Attending this program in-person is recommended. "Researching the Film Culture of Colonial Korea through Star Studies" led by Andy Lee, PhD candidate, Film & Media Studies in the English Department.

This talk introduces my current dissertation project, which reexamines the film history of colonial Korea through the concepts and methods of star studies. Despite only a dozen of the roughly 200 features made under Japanese rule surviving, film scholarship on colonial Korea has grown and expanded in recent decades, rebuilt through newspapers, magazines, and government records, and many works that came out mostly focus on policy, industry, and representation. Studying film stars helps us see another aspect of colonial film culture in relation to the competing meanings layered on stars and the societal contradictions they embodied, such as gender, nation, and colonial modernity. I also survey a brief history of film stars and celebrity culture in colonial Korea and close on one case study of Moon Ye-bong (1917-1999), a famous actress during the colonial period who became a renowned star in postwar North Korea but was disavowed in the South, further complicating the fractured nature of the historiography of Korean cinema.

"Cut and Paste: Toward a Theory and Practice of Desktop Documentary" led by Charlotte Scurlock, PhD candidate, Film & Media Studies in the English Department.

Life in the 2020s is mediated largely through interactive digital screens (computers, smartphones, tablets, et cetera), occupying increasing space in activities associated with labor and leisure, from the shift to remote work and education during the COVID-19 pandemic facilitated by Zoom Communications to the colloquialization of phrases like doomscrolling and screentime. In the midst of this screen saturated culture, filmmakers have explored ways of rendering the computer screen as a fertile platform for cinematic experimentation. One such output is the desktop documentary, or non-fictional films that use screen recording technology to treat the computer screen as both "camera lens and a canvas ... seek[ing] both to depict and question the ways we explore the world through the computer screen" (Catherine Grant 2015). This talk will introduce my dissertation research, which theorizes the desktop documentary in relation to two earlier cinematic practices: the long history of experimental found footage (or collage) filmmaking and the more contemporary scholarly practice of videographic criticism. Combining written scholarship with practice-based research in the form of short desktop documentaries, I reveal the intricacies with which contemporary screen-based technologies reshape traditional understandings of cinema and allow for a deeper understanding of online media cultures.

Abstract: : Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving from a passive analytical tool into an active partner in scientific discovery. In the material world, this transition requires systems that do more than recognize patterns: they must reason across scales, formulate hypotheses, design and execute investigations, learn from failure, and revise their own representations in response to evidence. This talk presents emerging approaches toward “superintelligent” discovery engines that integrate reinforcement learning, graph-based reasoning, physics-informed neural architectures, generative models, and autonomous tools for simulation, experimentation, design, and manufacturing. Particular emphasis will be placed on multi-agent systems inspired by collective intelligence in nature, in which specialized agents collaborate, critique one another, and continuously improve their strategies as they solve complex scientific problems. Case studies from materials science, engineering, and biology will illustrate how these systems can uncover hidden structure-property relationships, generate and evaluate novel material and molecular designs, connect knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, and transform scientific failures into new hypotheses and executable knowledge. These advances point toward a new form of artificial intelligence that actively expands the boundaries of human knowledge.

Short Bio Sketch: Markus J. Buehler is the McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT, a pioneer in AI-driven knowledge discovery and materials science. He created graph-aware, multi-agent AI platforms that turn heterogeneous data into science-grounded, actionable insight, powering breakthroughs in materials science, biology, and healthcare. Buehler is among the world's most-cited materials scientists and the recipient of numerous honors, including the Feynman Prize, ASME Drucker Medal, J. R. Rice Medal, and the Washington Award. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). For more than a decade he has also taught executive and technical professionals at MIT, shaping the next generation of leaders in engineering, knowledge discovery, and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Leong is one of the pioneers in developing multifunctional nanocarriers for delivery of drugs, antigens, proteins, siRNA, pDNA, and mRNA. Dr. Leong's contributions have been recognized by his election to the USA National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventors, and the Asian American Academy of Science and Engineering. Recent awards include the Society for Biomaterials' Founders Award (2022), the IEEE-EMBS Career Achievement Award (2023), and the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award (2024). Dr. Leong has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Biomaterials for the past decade.

This paper focuses on Anna Seghers, one of the msot prominent German anti-fascist, socialist writers of the twentieth century. Seghers helped found the Federation of Proletarian-Revolutionary Writers in the 1920s, became a key anti-Nazi writer duringthe Hitler dictatorship, and a founding mother of East German litertature after the war. A leading literary-cultural functionary in the German Democratic Republic, she was also the most important German socialist realist authro fo the twentieth century. What became of her legacy?

Title: Closing the Loop on Social Influence in Science

Abstract:

The prevalence of social influence in science is widely documented. But this influence is not one-sided. Social beliefs and values shape science, and at the same time are shaped by scientific findings. This mutual influence raises the possibility of dynamical interplay between science and society. But while this possibility has been mentioned numerous times in the literature, there is relatively little work attempting to analyze and outline how this mutual influence might work. This talk argues that two-way influence between science and society is promiscuous, occurring via a wide range of mechanisms that start with both values and related cultural background beliefs, and influence both values and related cultural background beliefs. I’ll discuss three sorts of general patterns at play—positive feedback, polarizing feedback, and amplification.

Modern medicine runs on single use. Most of what touches a patient is used once and thrown away, and health care's resulting footprint now causes disease burden on the scale of preventable medical errors. This session asks a design question: how did the disposable become the default, and how do engineers build the way out? We'll look at the problem honestly and then at devices that reimagine it, from a solar-powered system that outperformed the conventional standard of care to materials designed to break down safely instead of lingering as waste. Aimed at anyone who wants to design medicine that heals people without harming the planet.

This progressive program is ideal for climbers looking to take the next step beyond top-rope climbing in a supportive and supervised environment.

Prerequisite: Participants must hold a current Top-Rope Certification prior to the start of this course.

All rental gear is provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own climbing shoes and equipment.

Dr. Anderson is a Research Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he serves as Investigation Scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory's Sample Acquisition, Sample Processing and Handling System and as Principal Investigator of SPARTA, a geomechanical/geochemical instrument for characterizing planetary regolith. He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh and has spent over three decades studying Mars's tectonic evolution and regolith mechanics. He was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 2018 and serves on the ISRM Commission on Planetary Rock Mechanics, with over 100 publications to his name.

Staged Interiors and the Fragmented Dream Home examines how custom home building design and real estate imagery shape ideas of belonging, self-definition, and success. Drawing from personal and public archives, the project moves through printmaking, artist publications, and modular installations to reconsider model-home aesthetics as visual systems of conformity. Rather than treating the dream home as a stable ideal, the work breaks it apart through image constellations and fixed typologies that expose its reliance on repetition and prefabricated choice. These fragments become works on and of paper along with possible participatory forms that circulate beyond conventional display. In doing so, the project proposes counter-structures for living, where domestic space becomes open to critique and alternative possibilities.

Respondents include Hebah Uddin from English + Triton Mobley, Assistant Professor of Computational Art Practices + Expanded Cinema, Departments of Studio Arts + Film & Media Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Bio: Pramod K. Varshney was born in Allahabad, India, in 1952. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering and computer science (with highest honors), and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1972, 1974, and 1976 respectively. Since 1976 he has been with Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY where he is currently a Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His current research interests are in distributed sensor networks and data fusion, detection and estimation theory, wireless communications, machine learning, AI and radar.

Dr. Varshney was the recipient of the 1981 ASEE Dow Outstanding Young Faculty Award. He was elected to the grade of Fellow of the IEEE in 1997 for his contributions in the area of distributed detection and data fusion. In 2000, he received the Third Millennium Medal from the IEEE and Chancellor’s Citation for exceptional academic achievement at Syracuse University. He is the recipient of the IEEE 2012 Judith A. Resnik Award. He received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Drexel University in 2014, ECE Distinguished Alumni Award from UIUC in 2015, the Yaakov Bar-Shalom Award for Lifetime Excellence in Information Fusion as well as ISIF Fellow designation in 2018, the Claude Shannon-Harry Nyquist Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the Pioneer Award from the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Society in 2021, and Syracuse University Chancellor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

“The Power of Partnership: Advancing Health Through Community-Partnered Research”

Community-partnered research—scholarship that is created jointly through investing in meaningful relationships with community members and organizations—is essential to advancing engaging, applicable and high-impact science. However, few health and health care studies intentionally engage community partners throughout the entire research process. In fact, one study found that less than 1% of articles in high-impact medical journals reported using community-partnered approaches.

In her talk, Ragavan will describe evidence-based approaches to community engagement to improve health outcomes, using real-world examples from her research, including reducing perinatal intimate partner violence, developing dating violence interventions and promoting language access.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Anderson is this year's Distinguished Alumni honoree, recognizing his nearly three-decade career of pioneering contributions to Mars exploration at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and his continued leadership at the forefront of planetary science.

Talk Abstract:

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has been exploring the surface of Gale Crater for over ten years. To date, Curiosity has collected more than 855,000 images from its various cameras and 36 powderized rock samples with the drill on the end of its robotic arm. In addition, after 10 years, the rover has now driven up over 2,000 vertical feet on the mountain. With all this data, what have we learned from ten years of exploration on the Martian surface? In this presentation, we will highlight what Curiosity has found in Gale Crater to determine whether Mars was capable of supporting life.

FACT depletion results in a temporal cascade of chromatin disruption preceding transcriptional collapse in stem cells

The histone chaperone FACT is essential for chromatin organization and stem cell identity, yet the sequence of events through which FACT maintains chromatin integrity remains unclear. We generate a high-resolution temporal map of events leading to chromatin destabilization and cell identity loss in murine embryonic stem cells following dTAG-mediated depletion of FACT. Loss of FACT initiates a rapid cascade, with nucleosome phasing disruption and reduced H3K4me3 beginning within 10 minutes in a transcription-dependent manner. This architectural destabilization enables pluripotency transcription factors to ectopically occupy gene bodies. FACT loss results in RNA Polymerase II accumulation within 30 minutes and altered H3K36me3 deposition preceding a global transcriptional collapse at 2 hours of FACT depletion. FACT restoration fails to rescue these defects, demonstrating they are largely irreversible. Our findings define a temporal hierarchy in which FACT loss drives progressive deterioration of chromatin architecture, leading to transcriptional collapse in stem cells.

The Annual Lecture Series, the Center’s oldest program, was established in 1960, the year when Adolf Grünbaum founded the Center. Each year the series consists of six to eight lectures, about three quarters of which are given by philosophers, historians, and scientists from other universities.

Title: The Open Systems View

Abstract:

Quantum theory is commonly understood as a theory of closed, isolated systems, with open systems treated as merely effective descriptions obtained by embedding them into larger closed systems. In this talk, I challenge this assumption and defend the open systems view, according to which systems interacting with their environments can themselves be treated as fundamental. The motivation is both physical and methodological: in central areas of contemporary physics–decoherence, quantum thermodynamics, cosmology, and black hold physics–strict isolation is neither realistic nor clearly defined, and its privileged status rests on idealizations whose epistemic and ontological roles require closer scrutiny. I present a general framework for open quantum dynamics in which environmental influence is incorporated directly into the system’s dynamical laws, without presupposing an underlying unitary system-environment decomposition, thereby treating openness as a basic structural feature of quantum theory rather than a derivative approximation. I then argue that standard interpretations of quantum mechanics–both orthodox and Everettian–are, despite appearances, already committed to open systems at the ontological level. The open systems view thus moticates a rethinking of fundamentality, realism, and the role of idealization in quantum theory, and offers a methodologically transparent perspective on what quantum theory is fundamentally about.

Adolf Grünbaum Memorial Lecture

Adolf Grünbaum was the first Andrew Mellon Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh from 1960, when he was hired away from Lehigh, until his death in November 2018. He was the world preeminent philosopher of physics of his generation, and he was instrumental in building philosophy and philosophy of science at Pitt. Among other things, Adolf founded the Center for Philosophy of Science in 1960, and remained its director until 1978. Adolf also inaugurated the Annual Lecture Series in 1961, and so this is the 66th occurrence of this lecture series.

His works include very important books such as Philosophical Problems of Space and Time (1963) and The Foundations of Psychoanalysis (1984). In honor and memory of his legacy of prolific and profound contributions to the field of philosophy, the Center has established an annual Adolf Grünbaum Memorial Lecture thanks to a gift from his daughter Barbara Grünbaum and her family. This immersive, 24-hour+ virtual workshop is open to all University of Pittsburgh students – undergraduate, graduate, and students at regional campuses – and postdocs who are ready to turn their ideas into action. Big Idea Blitz is a supportive, fast-paced environment meant to spark progress. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and your drive.

This all-virtual program will consist of opening night elevator pitches, a Saturday workshop with Big Idea Center staff and entrepreneurs in residence, and a final, live practice pitch round with guest judges on the following Friday.

Teams will receive valuable insight and feedback from industry professionals that they can take with them into future competitive environments. This is your opportunity to not only advance your idea!

Title: Pragmatic Realism about Modality, Natural and Metaphysical

Abstract:

Modal notions—which deal with necessity, possibility, and counterfactually robust conditionals–are central to our explanatory, predictive, and practical decision-making activities. In this talk, I will focus on two distinct types of modality: first, natural modality, the sort associated with causation, laws of nature, and scientific explanation; and second, metaphysical modality, of the sort associated with essences, semantic externalism, and grounding explanation. I will present and defend a first-order realist, higher-order pragmatist view of these modal notions. On this view, modal notions are backed by real, in the world relations: invariant regularities in the case of natural modals, and identity-like relations in the case of metaphysical modals. What makes these relations modal, however, are facts about our inferential practices. A relation is modally robust, on this view, just in case (and because) it is suitable to back a pattern of truth-conducive deductive inferences. I argue that this higher-order pragmatic explanation of the modality of these relations doesn’t challenge the view’s first-order realism, but does provide the view with the resources to solve some of realism’s more intractable normative and epistemic problems.

The 10th anniversary edition of Decolonizing Educational Research: From Ownership to Answerability is an expansion of the first volume, through additional essays, intros and outros from scholars spanning the fields of education, gender and women’s studies, Indigenous studies, and dis/ability studies. In this book launch, book editor Leigh Patel will provide a brief overview of the pathway to this edition and then open up to four of the contributing authors, Drs. Z Nicolazzo, Briana Karena, Namibia Rodriquez, and Sean Adkins Hernandez. The book launch will include time for interaction and discussion with participants, both online and in person.

The first 15 in-person attendees will receive a free copy of the book.

This workshop is part of a series of seven workshops co-sponsored by CTSI Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design and the RCR Center.

Beginning with the assumption that a study has been designed, its aims and hypotheses clearly defined, and the data to be collected have been broadly identified, this workshop will address:

Part 1 - How to critically review your proposed data collection instruments, including issues of form design, validated vs standardized instruments, and foreign language translations.

Part 2 – How to convert the Table of Measures from your grant proposal into a tool to document data collection sources and track form development, file transfer protocols, and versioning. Part 3 - How to create a data dictionary that can be used to build a data collection system.  Topics include variable naming conventions, types, codes, dependency, and validations (subject matter: data acquisition and analysis).
