Modelling Reality: A Journey Through ATLAS Detector Simulation for Run3 and Beyond

This talk offers an overview of the role of Monte Carlo simulations in high-energy physics and within the ATLAS experiment, highlighting its importance for detector modelling and physics analyses. It introduces the fundamental principles of Monte Carlo methods with a focus on Geant4, complemented by practical examples demonstrating its use in HEP applications, from geometry description to synthetic raw ATLAS data. Additionally, we introduce FullSimLight, a standalone framework that enables Geant4 simulations outside the full ATLAS software environment. The seminar concludes with a discussion of recent optimisation efforts in ATLAS Full Simulation for Run 3 and the High-Luminosity LHC, highlighting improvements in performance and computing efficiency.

Dissertation Title:

The Politics of Refugee Return: Forced Repatriation, Public Opinion, and Migration Containment

Project description:

My dissertation examines the politics of refugee return and asks why returns that are supposed to be voluntary, safe, and dignified often occur under conditions that blur the line between choice and coercion. I argue that forced repatriation persists not simply because of weak legal protections, but because of political dynamics that operate at multiple levels of governance. The dissertation brings together three empirical studies. The first develops a new global measure of forced repatriation, showing that a substantial share of refugee returns since 1989 likely occurred under coercive pressure. The second investigates the domestic politics of return through a preregistered survey experiment in Turkey and finds that moral and strategic arguments intended to promote voluntary return often produce backlash among citizens. The third analyzes the international dimension of refugee governance by examining EU progress reports on Turkey and shows that international criticism of human rights violations becomes less frequent after migration cooperation deepens. Taken together, the dissertation demonstrates that refugee return is shaped not only by conditions in origin countries but also by measurement practices, domestic political pressures in host states, and international migration bargaining that prioritizes containment over protection.

Title: Precision synthesis: from atom swapping to atropisomeric metacyclophanes

Abstract: Subtle changes to the structure of a molecule are known to substantially impact its properties. My group has initiated two research directions that involve making precise modifications to a molecule. The talk will begin with the development of atom swapping reactions that result in the substitution of a heavy atom in a cyclic compound. The second part of the talk moves into three-dimensional space with macrocyclic metacyclophanes, which are common subunits in natural products and pharmaceuticals. We will discuss how one- or two-carbon modifications lead to significant changes in rotational barriers in these non-canonical atropisomers and demonstrate how a precise understanding of what is required for atropsiomerism enables the design of new macrocycles with complex topologies.

When, where, and how does social integration predict systemic inflammation?

Background: Low social integration is linked to higher levels of systemic inflammation– a marker of biological aging associated with increased disease risk. Most prior evidence is cross-sectional and based on single samples, limiting generalizability. It is also unknown whether social support mediates the link between social integration and inflammation, and whether age or cultural context moderates these associations. We tested whether social integration prospectively predicted systemic inflammation using an integrative data analysis to pool data from four cohorts in the US, England, Mexico, and Taiwan (Aim 1), whether social support mediated this association (Aim 2), and whether age and/or cohort moderated these associations (Exploratory Aim 3).

Methods: The Aim 1 analysis harmonized data from the Health and Retirement Study (US; N= 5,823), English Longitudinal Study of Aging (England; N= 3,994), Mexican Health and Aging Study (Mexico; N= 541), and the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study (Taiwan; N= 505), yielding a pooled sample of N= 10,863 (Mage= 69.8). Participants reported their social integration at baseline, operationalized as participation in four social roles (marital status, children, contact with close relatives or neighbors, community involvement), and provided blood samples, assayed for high sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) an average of 6 years later (range= 3-15 years). The Aim 2 subsample (N = 5,600; US, England, Mexico) also completed perceived social support questionnaires at an intermediate time point.

Results: Aim 1: Greater social integration prospectively predicted lower CRP (g= -.05, p < .001), consistent across most covariate-adjusted models. Aim 2: Social integration was associated with higher social support (a path: g = .14, 95% CI [.11, .16]), but support did not predict CRP. Age moderated the social integration-support link, with stronger associations among younger (-1 SD age 54 years: g = .17, p < .001) vs. older adults (+1 SD age 72 years: g = .12, p < .001). Exploratory analyses revealed a 3-way interaction: Within the Mexico cohort, social integration was associated with lower CRP among older adults (+1 SD age 73 years: g = -.29, p = .04) but not younger adults (-1 SD age 55 years: g = .02, p = .75), a pattern not observed in other cohorts.

Conclusion: Social integration prospectively predicts lower inflammation up to 15 years later, replicating and extending prior findings. Social support did not operate as a mediator. A unique pattern in Mexico, where social integration may benefit older adults but confer additional responsibilities that increase inflammation in younger adults, may reflect cultural norms around intergenerational living and familial caregiving.

Bacterial signal transduction: an E. coli view of the world

All cells sense and respond to physical and chemical cues in their environments. They accomplish this through signal transduction systems—networks of interacting proteins that detect and interpret specific input signals and control appropriate cellular responses. In bacteria, these systems are found in remarkable numbers within individual organisms and across different bacterial species. They play a central role in regulating basic aspects of microbial physiology and mediate responses to diverse environmental signals. I will describe work in which we have explored the organization and properties of these circuits in the well-studied and genetically tractable organism Escherichia coli.

Title: Crystallization in drug discovery and development: stories from process and medicinal chemistry

Abstract: Crystallization plays distinct, high‑value roles across the drug discovery and development continuum - from a decisive compass for structure‑guided medicinal chemistry to an enabling workhorse of process chemistry. This dual utility will be illustrated through two case studies. First, an industrial synthesis of an antimalarial clinical candidate showcases a fully crystallization‑based route eliminating all chromatographic purifications. Strategic discovery of multiple crystalline intermediates spanning a diastereoselective Claisen rearrangement/salt resolution, stereoselective iodolactonization, and stepwise formation of a densely substituted diazabicyclo[6.2.0]decane system enabled clinical entry of an antimalarial with a novel mechanism-of-action. Talk Title: They flip before they split! From Stern to Helmholtz to Modern Molecular

Abstract: Electrochemical water splitting begins in the nanoscopic layer of water molecules that sits directly on an electrode surface. In two recent studies, we developed a nonlinear optical method that reveals, for the first time, how many of these “Stern layer” water molecules must flip their orientation—and how much work that flipping requires—before the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can proceed. On hematite photoanodes, we find that one to two monolayers of water reorient at high pH, and that the energy needed to flip them matches the cohesive energy of liquid water, which helps explain hematite’s large overpotential, perhaps causally. On nickel electrodes, we observe a similar transition: a full monolayer aligns its oxygen atoms toward the surface before any Faradaic current flows, requiring ~80 kJ/mol of work. These results identify water flipping as a measurable, energetically significant step in electrocatalysis and point to new strategies for lowering OER overpotentials by engineering the interfacial water structure. Additional examples with Fe-doped nickel and Ti-doped hematite are presented as well, where the latter shows significantly more favorable water flipping upon photo excitation. Real-time tracking of water flipping during rapid alternating polarity is demonstrated as well to show evidence for ratcheting.

Speaker Bio: Franz Geiger is currently the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University, where he leads major research collaborations that involve experiments and computations to study the special role that surfaces and interfaces play in the world. He is a Fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). He is the recipient of the 2021 ACS Nobel laureate Signature Award (as preceptor, with Paul Ohno as student), the 2017 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize of the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation, and the 2016 Faculty Diversity Award from Northwestern University’s Graduate School. He served as Senior Editor and was appointed to Executive Editor at the Journal of Physical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society (ACS), as chair of the Experimental Physical Chemistry (EXP) subdivision of the ACS Physical Chemistry Division, on the Science Board of the Telluride Science Research Center (TSRC), on the International Advisory Board of the Pacific Conference on Spectroscopy and Dynamics, (PCSD), and on the Chemical Sciences Roundtable of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). He was the Ralph Grim Mineralogy Lecturer at the University of Illinois, the “Interdisciplinary Problems in Chemistry and Physics” Lecturer at the University of Maryland, a Baker Lecturer at Cornell University, and the 2025 Kaufman Lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh. Geiger joined the chemistry faculty of Northwestern University in 2001. He is a native of Berlin, Germany, where he received his Vordiplom in chemistry at the Technische Universitaet in 1993. He earned his PhD in 1998 at Georgetown University working with Janice Hicks as a NASA Fellow in Earth Systems Science, and was a NOAA Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate and Global Change with Mario Molina at MIT.

Talk Title: Chiral Cloud Chemistry

Abstract: The unmistakable smell of a pine forest is produced by biogenic volatile organic compounds that are called terpenes, most of which are chiral. These compounds eventually make their way into the atmosphere where they are oxidized. This process of oxidation allows the terpenes to interact with atmospheric water vapor and eventually leads to the formation of clouds, which impact the global environment through processes such as rainfall and the reflection of sunlight. In this way, there is a direct connection between trees on the ground and clouds in the skies that is governed by chemistry, yet many of the fundamental scientific details of this connection remain poorly understood. Chirality's role in the atmospheric cloud formation, in particular, remains largely unexplored. This lecture summarizes our recent experimental efforts and findings to close this knowledge gap.

Two Beams, One Detector: Chasing the Sterile Neutrino with MicroBooNE

For more than three decades, several neutrino experiments have reported puzzling results that do not fit within the standard three-neutrino picture, motivating the idea of a sterile neutrino. These hints have raised the possibility that neutrinos may be more complex than currently understood, but testing this idea has proven challenging.

In this colloquium, I will describe how the MicroBooNE experiment takes a new approach to this problem. By observing neutrinos from two different accelerator beams in the same detector—a “two beams, one detector” strategy—MicroBooNE can compare their behavior in a particularly direct way. Using this approach, MicroBooNE finds no evidence for a light sterile neutrino and rules out the regions suggested by earlier experiments such as LSND and MiniBooNE. I will briefly place this result in the broader context of ongoing searches for sterile neutrinos, including recent complementary constraints from the KATRIN experiment.

He is a nationally recognized educator, researcher, administrator and entrepreneur with major contributions in medicine and life sciences. At Pitt, Dr. Shekhar leads the Schools of Dental Medicine, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health, which have driven education and research in their respective fields for more than a century, propelling scientific discoveries and clinical innovation that advance human health on an international scale. An accomplished neuroscientist, Dr. Shekhar led seminal research studies identifying novel treatments for schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders, and founded multiple biotech companies to develop these therapies for patient use.

Dr. Shekhar is a tenured member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation; and board member of the Clinical Research Forum in Washington D.C., which convenes leaders at the highest levels in academia, government, and industry to address challenges and opportunities in clinical research. He also serves on the Board of Directors at UPMC and UPMC’s Children’s, Magee-Womens, Presbyterian, and Shadyside Hospitals. PLOT:Just three feature films, two short documentaries, and a few fragments: this is all that remains of the filmography of Elvira Notari, the first Italian female film director. While her life remains partly an enigma – she left no letters or diaries, and few photographs of her exist – today, 150 years after her birth, her work is at the center of renewed interest. A protagonist of the golden age of Neapolitan silent cinema, Elvira made over 60 films that, intertwining popular culture and an authentic view of city life, captivated audiences from Naples to the Little Italies of the United States. With the advent of sound, and affected by fascist censorship, she abandoned filmmaking in 1930, and her work fell into silence. Today, Elvira returns to the spotlight thanks to the work of scholars and artists who are recovering her legacy and reinterpreting it through the creation of new works. Intertwining historical memory and contemporary rediscovery, Elvira Notari: Beyond the Silence offers a vibrant and nuanced portrait of a film pioneer whose work resonates again in the present.

PLOT:Two worlds collide on an unspoiled stretch of coastline in southern Sardinia. Efisio Mulas is a solitary shepherd, the silent guardian of a time that seems to no longer exist. On the other side is Giacomo, president of a powerful real estate group, a symbol of an Italy striving towards the future. He is determined to transform that coast into a luxury resort. When Efisio refuses yet another multi-million dollar offer, the negotiation turns into a legal battle in which Giovanna, a judge born and raised in the area, is called upon to resolve the conflict.

As the pressure mounts and the community is divided between those who dream of new job opportunities and those who fear losing their identity forever, Efisio's unwavering "no" takes on a collective meaning. Strong in the value of his choices and the memory of those who came before him, Efisio knows that sometimes, precisely because "that's how life is," you have to stop and decide for yourself where to go.

Speaker Bio: Prof. T. Daniel Crawford is the University Distinguished Professor and Ethyl Chair of Chemistry at Virginia Tech, as well as the Director of the Molecular Sciences Software Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1992 from Duke University and his Ph.D. in 1996 from the University of Georgia's Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry under the direction of Prof. Henry F. Schaefer. He held joint postdoctoral positions at U. Georgia and U. Texas before joining the Virginia Tech faculty in 2000. Prof. Crawford's research focuses on the development of accurate quantum mechanical models for simulating the optical and vibrational spectra of chiral molecules. He has given more than 230 lectures in 27 countries. Prof. Crawford is the winner of 2010 Dirac Medal of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists, winner of the 2023 Cottrell STAR Award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, and an elected member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the Deputy Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry A.

“Transforming Political Conﬂict: The Power of Participatory Listening”

This lecture will introduce and defend “participatory listening,” a communicative practice that involves listening for, and constructively engaging with, emotionally “deep” and symbolically rich stories that help to generate political conﬂict. Participatory listening creates cognitive and perceptual “space” in which those who accept such stories can appreciate that their identities, and their political imagination, need not be constrained by narratives prioritizing grievance, dehumanizing others, and encouraging intractable political division. Participatory listening thereby opens up the possibility for constructive transformation of even the most persistent and violent political conﬂicts.

Projection Areas of 4-Dimensional Shapes

The "Pittsburgh Mathematical Horizons" Public Lecture Series is a newly established annual lecture series made possible by generous funding from the Benter Foundation. It is to feature excellent speakers who can present a topic in modern mathematics of interest to research mathematicians, but at the same time make it accessible to the science-interested public in Pittsburgh and its surroundings.

Consider a convex body in 4-dimensional space—perhaps an ellipsoid or a polytope. When we project the convex body onto the six coordinate planes, we obtain six planar shadows whose areas we can measure. This leads to a deceptively simple question: which six numbers can arise as these projection areas?

Behind this concrete geometric problem lies a web of deep mathematics connecting Minkowski's classical work on the isoperimetric problem to recent developments in algebraic geometry. I will trace the path to the answer, revealing the rich mathematical landscape that emerges from this seemingly elementary question.

The underwater world, the forest with the Tree of Violence growing in its centre, revived monuments, bouquets of generations—these and other symbols of the post-Soviet space appear in Victoria Lomasko’s monumental works. Lomasko became internationally recognized as a graphic journalist telling stories about socially vulnerable groups and protests. Gradually, images from reality began to transform into poetic symbols and to change scale: from sketchbook pages to multi-meter murals and panels.

The pandemic, participation in the Belarusian revolution, the war in Ukraine, and emigration made this transformation irreversible—Lomasko believes that in times of historical change, artists must speak not about particular issues, as journalists do, but about a global process, as a visionary. Studying reality with a pencil in hand, participating in historical events, and transforming the knowledge gathered into symbols of one's time—this is a process many 20th-century artists used. Through their works and her own, Lomasko will show the logic of the changing artist’s role.

Using Neutron Stars to Reveal the Secrets of Dense Matter

Matter inside neutron stars and their mergers can reach densities of more than 10 times normal nuclear density. In such extreme environments, new particles and phases of matter appear, as well as different interactions become important. I review old and new ways to use neutron star observables to learn about dense matter, comment on what we know and what we expect to discover within the next years concerning dense matter, and provide an overview of modern ways to build and share dense matter descriptions (usually referred to as equations of state).
